Bar Mitzvah

A bar owner friend of mine just reminded me of an old idea I pitched to him for a bar in Manhattan with a 90's bar mitzvah theme called "Bar Mitzvah."  I'm thinking Murray Hill?

A beer so cold it defies physics

Image
I'm not 100% this idea will work exactly, but I'm pretty sure it will.  Basically, the idea is a patented vending style machine, that keeps cans of beer or soda, spinning constantly so that you can drop the beverages temperature slightly below its freezing point without it turning to ice.  Every beer company always advertises "Ice cold," but it's a misnomer, because "ice cold" is not a beverage it's a solid.  but when liquid is in motion it is more difficult to freeze it, or at least it takes a lower temperature.  So theoretically if the liquid is kept in motion you could chill it colder. I doubt it would make that much of a difference experientially, but the marketing implications are crazy strong.  If you could actually get a patent issued, which I think you could, you could license to top manufacturers that they could use to help push product and get people talking about it.

A better way to watch sports

Image
Some people call me crazy, but, if I'm alone I prefer to watch football on DVR about an hour behind so I can fast forward the commercials.  I think it's safe to assume I'm not the only one.  The truth is most Sundays I don't have a choice, because I'm with my family and the kids, and it's not so easy to slip away  for 3 hours to watch one game, let alone 2 or 3.  I'm sure the same thing goes with other sports for other people as well.  Baseball even has games going on in the middle of the work day during the season so people have to be watching recordings. As far as sports go, I personally rarely watch sports on TV besides Eagles football, but I do like watching a good game, regardless of who's playing.  The problem is that there's really no way to tell if a game is going to be good until after you've watched it. Here's the idea, a website/app that rates sporting games after they happen.  You could DVR a bunch of football games Sunday, ...

The newest workout craze

Image
This idea just came to me today while playing with my kids.  It seems everyone is trying to find a more fun way to workout; what about a workout class that incorporated your kids directly into the workout.  Someone with some expertise would need to come up with different types of exercises that incorporates a baby, a toddler, or a small child.  The possibilities are endless.  You could do arm curls with your kids, or " Good Mornings " with them on your shoulders, or Squats with them in your arms... Each class could start with some simple warm ups your kids could do too. I could see coming up with a clever name for the style of working out with some sort of pun in it.  You could trademark and hope it goes viral.  If you have any good name ideas, I'd love to hear them. Some of the benefits of a workout like this: Don't have to worry about child care while you exercise Good bonding with your kids Good opportunity to meet other people with kids similar...

My Craigslist Hack

Image
After reading a chapter from one of my favorite books Predictably Irrational  I learned how the brain processes information all based on comparisons.  In the book he gives an example that some restaurants will put an expensive item on the menu not necessarily to sell that item, but so by comparison the 2nd most expensive thing on the menu doesn't seem so pricey. This whole concept is VERY interesting to me and I've used it to my advantage in more ways than I can even recall at this point.  I wanted to share 1 particular application I came up with that I think is a powerful way to improve your chances of selling or even buying on Craigslist. Years ago when I had to sell my Honda Civic, I looked up the Blue Book value, which at the time was $3,500 and posted it on Craigslist for that amount.  After not getting that many responses I came up with an idea to use the newly acquired lesson from Predictably Irrational.  I went on Craigslist Los Angelos (I live in Ph...

Startup Corps

Image
For several years I was teaching entrepreneurship to high school kids through a not-for-profit called Startup Corps .  The idea was to get kids to actually create businesses, not just fantasize about it.  Initially we worked mostly in inner city schools, but eventually we developed a group we called "The Hub" which was the best and the brightest young entrepreneurs from all over Philadelphia and surrounding suburbs. I had gotten so good at helping kids develop their ideas into something that possibly could work, when we launched The Hub at First Round Capital I was one of the main instructors.  I'd meet with the kids weekly to teach and mentor.  In this blog post I wanted to share a couple of those experiences. The best idea -in my opinion- to ever come out of the program was from a young girl at an inner city school.  If I remember correctly the school was in Germantown, not a nice area.  Most of the kids had little or no support from their families. ...
